Newly appointed Visiting Committee members undergo initial training within their own committee and in their own establishment. This will include pairing with an experienced member for the first few months.
In addition, the Scottish Prison Service provides induction training and give presentations to Visiting Committees from time to time on specific issues.
Training provided by the Association builds on individual committee training and covers wider issues such as human rights and health & safety. Guest speakers present at the Association’s quarterly business meetings and annual conference. These events are open to all Visiting Committee members and participation is widely encouraged. All courses will take place at the Scottish Prison Service College, Brightons, Falkirk. Delegates from the more distant prisons can book overnight accommodation at the College, by arrangement. Lunch is provided on all courses. T & S will be covered by the AVC.
